Wouldn’t it be ideal to find an adhesive bandage or digital avatar in your exact skin tone? PANTONE is pushing brands and designers to attain those goals with its SkinTone Guide, which is marking its 10th anniversary this year.

The 2023 edition adds 28 new shades, bringing the total to 138 inclusive skin tones. Joining the spectrum are “darker tones and yellow undertones,” among others.

To flesh out the multifaceted reference, PANTONE’s color scientists measured thousands of real skin tones in hopes of delivering an accurate match for people from all walks of life.

Beyond the traditional spheres of fashion, beauty, and product design, the color authority sees SkinTones’ applications in an increasingly hybrid world, where true representation occupies the digital and physical realms. With greater emphasis on Web 3.0, PANTONE imagines true-to-life complexions on virtual avatars and video game characters.

“Color inclusivity has always been an important part of our work, and we look forward to leading that charge in this next evolution of our products,” says Tannese Williams, Product Manager for Fashion, Home & Interiors for PANTONE. “Color inclusivity has always been an important part of our work, and we look forward to leading that charge in this next evolution of our products.”
