While candles are a quick way to spruce up any space in just minutes, widely-available options don’t seem to be the most eco-friendly or cost-effective. After all, once all of the wax has been burned, there aren’t many ways for one to reuse the product.
As such, product design agency Blond partnered with homeware startup Tesoro to develop an “infinitely refillable” aroma candle that isn’t just better for the environment but can also complement and add a touch of finesse to any interior aesthetic.
The duo came up with a simple universal refill made from “infinitely recyclable” aluminum, which can be suspended within glass “vessels” of various shapes and sizes, meant to be “a treasured home decor object” that suits a variety of layouts.
By creating a system in which the refillable component was “always the same,” buyers will be able to easily purchase the fragrance refills to update vessels of all shapes, materials, and sizes according to their tastes.
In total, consumers can choose from 40 different fragrances across 10 mood categories, each scent draped in its own vibrant color for easy identification. Each of the refill pods comes with a microscopic layer of anodization to create a premium finish but still render them recyclable.
Interestingly, as perDesign Week, Blond found in its research that no candle had been explicitly developed with interior design in mind. Popular options are usually “heavily branded” or “block of wax” candles that aren’t as safe or pleasing to the eye.
In addition, to ensure the product is truly sustainable, the candle’s packaging is 100% recyclable—with nothing from the product meant to end up in a landfill. This packaging will be able to hold other products in the future, reducing any possibility of waste.
Going forward, Tesoro plans to expand its “refillable architecture” range to include more fragrances in the future. The firm is also looking into electronics-based products and bathroom products.
