‘Dieter Rams Meets Picasso’ Speakers Are Made From 44 Discarded Plastic Bags

Design studio Gomi recently launched its first collection of portable Bluetooth speakers, complete with an eco-friendly twist. Within ‘Collection One’, which aims to show that waste can be transformed into beauty, each item is made entirely out of plastic waste and old e-bike batteries.

Just with this collection alone, the UK-based firm says that it has saved over six tonnes of plastic waste from entering the landfill—thanks to the local recycling companies that help source the material that would otherwise end up incinerated or taking decades to biodegrade.

The waste is turned back into its raw form before it’s made into a speaker, from which customers can choose from three distinct colorways. Each speaker is made from 44 plastic bags in modular components, which can be individually fixed or replaced to prolong the life cycle of the product.

Tom Meades, Co-Founder at Gomi, explained that the collection’s aesthetic is a “fine balance” between “Dieter Rams and Picasso.” All three designs are inspired by different artworks, and because they’re handmade, each features its own unique details.

Customers can choose to upgrade the speaker’s Bluetooth connectivity as updates become available, and the company promises to offer trade-in, repair, and product upgrading facilities for life to show that sustainable technology is possible, even if it comes from waste.
