Homebodies will be compelled to find reasons to make merry in everyday life with IKEA’s latest ÖMSESIDIG collection, designed alongside nine Latin American artists.
The resulting home range is decidedly vivid, as creatives hailing from Mexico, Colombia, and Chile have infused their own spins on celebration into these 30 items. ÖMSESIDIG, meaning “mutual” in Swedish, embodies the richness of Latin American culture and expression that—although diverse, also harmonizes.
The party spirit is carried into glassware, textiles, decorations, and dining ware, inviting hosts and guests, or just creatures of habit, to live their best lives through food and music—regardless of space and budget limitations.
IKEA says it has always been curious about what life at home means to people around the world. With ÖMSESIDIG, it’s been able to “[connect] directly with local creatives from various fields, including design, fashion, art, food, and architecture,” for a glimpse of their experiences.
The selection includes three vibrant covers for IKEA’s SYMFONISK picture frames that double as speakers, along with two visual treatments of the classic FRAKTA bags.
As mentioned before, every piece is an embodiment of its artist’s experience with gatherings and celebrations. Chilean product designer Abel Cárcamo Segovia, for instance, drew from the country’s love of dancing and translated it into curved, free-flowing silhouettes for kitchen utensils. Colombian muralist Diana Ordóñez looked to carnivals and channeled them into bold and colorful patterns.
“I really love to use colors in all my art, to make people feel like they are also at a carnival with me,” Ordóñez comments. “Color is the energy that everybody brings to the party.”
ÖMSESIDIG is primed to be the life of the party when it rolls out in IKEA stores in April.
