Whiskey Distillery Building Mimics The Journey Of Water To ‘Flow’ Like A River

International architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has dreamed up yet another unique building, this time involving a planned whiskey distillery by Blue Run Spirits situated in Georgetown, Kentucky.

Scheduled to open its doors in 2025, the 35,000-square-foot building, which comes with an additional 20,000-square-foot rickhouse, will soon break ground at the Lanes Run Business Park.

Dubbed ‘Meander’, the “flowing” layout of the structure draws inspiration from the journey the limestone-rich water takes from the Royal Spring in Georgetown, as it makes its way through the distilling, aging, and blending process to become bourbon and whiskey.

Mimicking a “single linear sequence,” the building moves through the gentle hillsides on the site, “creating bends and banks, inlets, and outlooks.” Impressively, its roof is made up of a single shingled roof with photovoltaic tiles that twists and turns with the structure.

“In the same way the Royal Spring is shaped by how the water flows through it, Blue Run Distillery is shaped by the flow of the whiskey and the processes and people who make it,” explained Founder Bjarke Ingels.

“The design BIG has developed is in dialogue with the landscape, the meandering path to making whiskey, and a manifestation of the bold, distinct, and inviting ethos that signifies Blue Run Spirits,” concurred co-founder Mike Montgomery.
