Casio Reinforces Its Iconic G-SHOCK Watch With Toughened Steel Crystals

As part of its 40th anniversary of the original G-SHOCK from 1983, Casio has re-released an updated version of the watch.
 
Its celebration continues with a trio of recrystallized timepieces outfitted in heat-fortified steel, giving the iconic watches a revitalized and robust look. The G-SHOCK has always been known for its shock-resistant design and ability to withstand tough conditions. With the addition of hardened steel crystals, it is now even more resilient against impact and damage. 

While making the watches, Casio introduced gas to the surface of the steel to harden it, replacing the need to add a separate layer on top while making the metal three times harder than usual.
 
What is presented in the end is a rugged form factor that looks like it came straight out of the kiln of a blacksmith, with textured metal and a glittering sheen to it.

Perhaps the most notable part of this process is that each piece will come out slightly different from the rest of its batch, offering the user a unique watch.
 
The G-SHOCK GMW-B5000PG and the G-SHOCK GMW-B5000PS come in hot with a gold and silver colorway and the iconic octagonal face shape.

Other features include a battery life of two years, dust-proofing, water resistance of 656 feet, and solar charging. The watch can also link to your smartphone via Bluetooth to keep its time accurate no matter where you are. There is also a phone finder feature on the timepiece which is activated via a button. 
 
The trio will be available online, ranging between US$330 and US$969.
