Computer-Boosted Running Shoes Give Athletes A Leg Up On Exercise

A Swiss-based athletic shoe company, On, is turning to computers to aid it in developing a pair of sneakers that will leverage and protect a runner’s best asset, their feet.
 
The new ‘Cloudsurfer’ relied on a computer program called CloudTec Phase to pick out its metrics, everything from the midsoles’ positioning to its shape.

CloudTec is a program based on Finite Element Analysis (FEA). This software analyzes each part of a shoe and optimizes it to relieve stress on a runner’s feet.
 
One of the most prominent features of the Cloudsurfer is its slanted midsoles with holes. These punctures are designed to expand and contract as the user runs, providing a smoother and more balanced gait. This feature not only improves the wearer’s performance but also helps to reduce the risk of injuries caused by an uneven stride.

In addition, the Cloudsurfer has a heel that stands at 10mm, which is an ideal height for most runners. This height provides a good balance of cushioning and support, making it comfortable to wear even during long-distance trekking. The shoe’s weight is also optimized, with each side weighing 8.64 oz, ensuring the sneakers are lightweight enough for efficient exercise.
 
The Cloudsurfer is available in four colors: black, mint green, white, and bright orange. Each pair is priced at US$160.
