Stretch Of Oil Refineries To Transform Into ‘Land Of Tomorrow’ Seafront Scape

Architectural firm Fosters + Partners is collaborating with Petrolina Group, a petroleum company in Larnaca, Cyprus, on a new project that will see over a mile of oil refineries turned into a stunning seafront landscape that aims to be a center for tourists of the future.

According to the architects, the hope is that this monumental undertaking will see an area linked to fossil fuels transform into a “thriving and sustainable community” that will better serve the city as it enhances its ecological value and double the length of accessible waterfront.

Embodying this eco-friendly step forward in its name, ‘The Land of Tomorrow’, the site will connect itself to the existing urban fabric of the region, while acting as a catalyst for further expansion into the north of the city.

“The masterplan retains and enhances the city’s character while creating an exciting new vision for its future,” explained Ben Scott, Senior Partner at Foster + Partners.

“Our approach has been developed in close consultation with the city authorities, building on the municipality's key initiatives which promote sustainable and holistic urban growth,” he added.

A network of tree-lined streets and landscaped plazas will be spread out across the site, connecting the different elements of the master plan, as the city’s canals are rewilded to act as new homes for wildlife and greenery near the coastline.

In addition, the existing Larnaca-Dhekelia Road highway will be reconstructed into a verdant and pedestrian-friendly street where residents and visitors can walk around and partake in new public amenities.

Overall, the plan believes that these forthcoming developments will help create new business opportunities for those in the area, and attract more tourists. A separate mobility plan to connect the region with the wider city is currently in the works with the authorities.
