As Levi’s turns to artificial intelligence to create diverse fashion models for its campaigns, luxury denim brand G-Star RAW is upping the ante and bringing denim couture designed by algorithms to the real world.

The result? A special ‘AI Denim Cape’ that’s one of 12 pieces of a collection the label has designed by collaborating with the image generator Midjourney using a series of descriptive prompts, with the blueprint then turned into an actual garment at its atelier in Amsterdam.

To create the haute couture cape, the design team used prompts including “denim cape morphic, model is wearing, organic shapes, minimal, ratio, futuristic hardware, techwear fashion, white background, and 4K.”

Once the image was produced, tailors had the tough task of creating the garment without a sketch or pattern, but just a single reference point. According to the brand, the team first came up with several mockups and thought of how the back of the cape should look during the process.

In addition, it was time-consuming to determine which of the “illogical details” dreamed up by the AI generator could work. The tailors spent hours pouring over how the different layers of the cape were connected, and where particular details began and ended.

Overall, the experiment did bring out a sense of creativity and fun, as it allowed designers to escape from the digital dimension and create something real, while tailors got to work on a look that one would typically “never design as a human.”

Going forward, the company plans on looking into more opportunities to involve AI in innovation and experimentation, claiming “with our digital world expanding even further and in the introduction of events such as Metaverse Fashion Week, there really is no slowing down.”

“But our ideology remains the same: there is no limit to what denim can do,” it added.
