Millions of Twitter users recently woke up to find the iconic blue bird logo above the home button on the platform’s webpage had turned into a Shiba Inu or “Doge,”—yes, the emblem of the “joke” Dogecoin cryptocurrency that was created back in 2013.
While unexpected, the appearance of Doge wasn’t entirely surprising, considering CEO Elon Musk has been a long-time fan of the meme, and even promoted the virtual asset on the site multipletimesbefore.
Acknowledging the change, Musk tweeted a simple “as promised,” attaching an image of a year-old conversation in which it was suggested that the billionaire buy over the social network and “change the bird logo to a Doge.”
Interestingly, according to Reuters, the decision to feature the cryptocurrency mascot as Twitter’s logo comes just days after the Chief petitioned a judge to dismiss a US$258 billion racketeering lawsuit that accused him of running a pyramid scheme to support the token.
As per CNN, since the switch, the “typically volatile” price of Dogecoin has risen over 20% in over 24 hours. At the moment, it’s anyone’s guess how long the emblem will stick around on Twitter, or if the change was intended to be permanent.
