While Tinder made waves on social media for an April Fool’s joke “banning” pictures of men holding fish, it appears the online dating service was actually working on an exclusive subscription offering that remains under wraps.
According to Fast Company, Chief Product Officer Mark Van Ryswyk confirmed the dating application is testing a new, incredibly expensive US$500 monthly subscription tentatively dubbed ‘Tinder Vault.’
Of course, as with any other function in the works, it’s important to note that the company may change its name, price, or abandon the project altogether if it shows no promise. Though, rumblings of this particular feature began back in February this year.
As per Gizmodo, Reddit user SmithMano was the first to hint at the addition by posting screenshots of promotions of the subscription, which seemed to offer access to users at US$500 per month or US$5,000 per year for “special status” and a “priority pass.”
While the details weren’t fleshed out, it seems users who shell out will receive more profile boosts than other tiers currently available, along with proposed incentives such as a “personalized concierge service” that would offer dating advice 24/7.
In addition, the costly tier will come with a “premium passport” function that will allow users access to the application’s “most active and influential members,” though it’s unclear what—or who—that entails.
As Van Ryswyk revealed, the idea of Tinder Vault came from the company’s experiences with The League, an application it purchased last year that markets itself to the ultra-wealthy and costs up to US$1,000 per week.
Will this new feature help boost Tinder’s revenue after it reported a 2% decline in 2022 as compared to the year before? Perhaps, if the introduction of “premium subscription features” and “premium discovery preferences” help boost engagement.
