Paper Coffee Cups Pour Out Plastic For Healthier Canola-Based Lining

Paper cups have been the “green” alternative to their plastic counterparts for a long time now. Still, the reality is that they are often lined with materials derived from fossil fuels, making them difficult to recycle. 

Phade is challenging this norm with what it touts as the world’s first paper cup lined with PHA, a cutting-edge material derived from fermented canola oil.

The company’s website cited research done by Environmental Science & Technology, which showed how the lining could release trillions of plastic nanoparticles into the liquid within the cup as well.

Not only is this new design fully compostable at home and recyclable through standard programs, but it is also marine-biodegradable, meaning that it poses no threat to our oceans and the animals that inhabit them. On top of that, it reduces the chances of microplastics entering your coffee.

Phade, which previously invented a PHA straw offering sturdiness without harming marine life and especially turtles, is now selling these cups online for US$95 for 660 pieces with a volume of 16 oz. As of right now, shipping is contained within the US.
