Biodegradable chewing gum brand Nuud recently rolled out an eye-catching campaign that raises awareness of popular gum varieties still using single-use plastic in their products, in the form of vibrant billboards plastered with anti-plastic messages across recognizable packaging.
The Chew Plants Not Plastic campaign, created in collaboration with creative agency TheOr, highlights a problem that most pieces of chewing gum contain up to a drinking straw’s worth of plastic content—all hidden in plain sight.
A survey conducted by the brand showed that 74% of consumers in Britain were concerned about the health impacts of ingesting plastic, while 84% of respondents believe it is up to these big gum brands to disclose the amount of plastic found in the sweets.
75% of the people surveyed said they’d even support a ban on chewing gum containing single-use plastic. The reason why the problem isn’t more talked about, as Keir Carnie, founder of Nuud, told Campaign, is because the plastic is often listed under “gum base” on ingredients lists.
That was the impetus for this call-out campaign, as Carnie felt that brands need to be more transparent so that consumers will finally be aware that they’re putting “this big blob of plastic” into their stomachs.
84% of consumers want big gum manufacturers to clearly label the plastic ingredients in their products. But they'd never do that - it would be bad for business. So @NuudGum has kindly done it for them. pic.twitter.com/RuV6VH2Dmk
