Tesla Cybertruck’s Exaggeratedly Large Windshield Wiper Shown At Work In 4K

The official unveiling of the mythical beast that is Tesla’s Cybertruck has been overdue for a couple of years, leaving fans to collect whatever crumbs they can get from the futuristic pickup.

The latest leak, however, is anything but crumb-sized. It showcases the absurdly oversized windshield wiper that the public first had a peek of in 2021. Although the detail was added to meet US road safety regulations, the wiper’s chunkiness has had many questioning if it is even practical.

Ever since the blade was introduced, its design has been updated several times, with prototypes ranging in size.

Now, for the first time, Tesla fans can admire the larger-than-life windshield wiper in action, thanks to drone footage captured by aerial photographer and videographer Brad Sloan over the Texas Gigafactory.

In the video, a Tesla worker is seen spraying water onto the windshield, prompting the blade to clean the front. The Cybertruck is visible around the 13:00 mark. You get a bird’s-eye view of its windshield at work—in 4K resolution, to boot—at 13:42.

The footage proves that, yes, the gigantic wiper is functional, though it only covers most—not all—of the windshield.

As Electrek points out, the Cybertruck appears to be in aerodynamic testing in the video, as the vehicle is propped up on a spinning platform, with shipping containers guised as an airflow simulator in front of it.

While there’s finally a closer look at this feature, that’s not to say this will be the final design of the windshield wiper. Tesla has returned to the drawing board on multiple occasions to fine-tune the truck’s novel appearance, and this blade prototype resembles some variants that CEO Elon Musk had emphasized weren’t the official version.

“The wiper is what troubles me most,” Musk tweeted back in December 2021 (via Insider). “Deployable wiper that stows in front trunk would be ideal, but complex,” he added.
