Luxury Denim Brand G-Star Raw Refashions Old Jeans Into Furniture, A Private Jet

Jeans brand G-Star Raw has teamed up with cult designer Maarten Baas on a series of thought-provoking art pieces that turn old, worn-out denim into jaw-dropping sculptures, including a triptych of cabinets in the shape of pants and an entire private jet decked out in blue.

The artworks will be on show at this year’s Milan Design Week, which, fittingly, will be exploring the topic of More or Less—otherwise known as the core issue between humanity’s desire for more and the urgent need to consume less.

Using a new textile board material made from recycled denim, which was specially created for the brand by Danish textile innovators Really / Kvadrat, Baas dreamed up a series of cabinets reminiscent of pairs of jeans.

Despite its playful appearance, the furniture—crafted from jeans collected from the brand’s ‘Return Your Denim’ recycling program across Europe—is functional, with G-Star suggesting it can be used to store, you guessed it, pairs of jeans and other denim items.

Even more impressive is the 15-meter (49-foot) jet, also built using denim waste. Baas had thought of the concept while working on the cabinets and wanted to use its massive scale not only to provoke reactions from viewers but also comment on wider sustainability issues.

“Every year in Milan, I witness the tragicomic dialogue between green design and mass consumption. When G-Star approached me to collaborate, it was the perfect opportunity to focus on this relevant dilemma,” quipped Baas.

“After all, we are all part of the same puzzle: we enjoy our Prosecco next to this private jet made from recycled materials. We are not saving the world, but are we contributing to an improvement? More or less,” he added.

More or Less is open to the public from April 18 to 23 in Chiesa San Paolo Converso, Piazza Sant’Eufemia 1, Milan. Entry is free. The denim cabinets are available to purchase upon request from G-Star Raw.
