Think of hospitals and clinics, and it’s only natural images of blank, white walls are conjured. That’s not the image the famed Mayo Clinic aims to portray, as its latest campaign showcases its latest research and technology in the form of vibrant, futuristic advertisements.
Reminiscent of sci-fi movies, the stunning visual clips display researchers in the foreground of sleek laboratories while robotic arms go to work, with terms such as “unsolvable,” “untreatable,” and “undefinable” have the “un” prefix knocked away.
According to the hospital, the spots are “metaphorical representations” of how its high-tech practices are being used to treat patients and the ways its doctors are using innovation to literally remove the barriers standing in the way of a cure.
The campaign was developed by Mayo Clinic’s new internal creative agency, focusing on “engaging, vivid visuals” to change the narrative of words commonly uttered by patients in waiting rooms—seeing them visibly switch from negative to positive.
To create a Hollywood-esque impact, the team researched, developed, and worked with entirely new production techniques to bring the vision to life. For example, state-of-the-art technology was filmed in front of LED walls and floors to create unique lighting and backdrops.
“At Mayo Clinic, we have reimagined health care and continue to challenge what was previously commonplace—the unknown, the limitations, the lack of options. We’ve dedicated ourselves to removing these barriers from the patient experience,” said Chief Marketing Officer Sherri Gilligan.
“With this campaign, we are challenging the category's traditional approach to advertising, much like we continue to challenge traditional approaches in health care more broadly,” summed up Wes Weleczki, Executive Creative Director at Mayo Clinic.
