Ford’s Latest Patent Unveils Special Gullwing SUV Door That Opens To One Side

Could the SUV, commonly known as a family vehicle, revamp its image by adding features akin to that of a sports car? Well, that may soon become reality, seeing as Ford’s latest patent unveiled a special gullwing door that would see its rear doors open up to one side.

According to Motor1, the patent was first filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office in October 2021 but was only published last week. While the document itself didn’t specify the cars on which this new door may appear, the images depict the unmistakable shape of an SUV.

The publication noted that Ford isn’t the first automaker to have introduced a gullwing door. In fact, the idea was first spotted on the iconic Mercedes-Benz 200 SL in the 1950s, when the doors were hinged at the roofline and opened upwards instead of to the side like regular vehicles.

Ford’s concept has minor differences from the original, seeing as the giant door opens up to the side, allowing for the car to look dramatic and exude an intriguing, asymmetrical view when looked at from above.

Installing a gullwing door in the car could have numerous benefits, including the extra space for passengers to sit in, and no more bumping one’s head on the door while getting in or out of the vehicle.

Wheelchair users may also be able to board vans more easily due to the larger door opening, though Gear Patrol cautions that if such an addition does come to market, it would probably be an expensive, optional add-on.

Of course, as with most trademarks filed by companies, this doesn’t guarantee that the idea will turn into reality. Just over a month ago, GM explored the idea of self-cleaning touchscreens that’ll give drivers fingerprint-free dashboards.
