Corona Extra Invites Fans To Protect Mexico’s Coasts By Snapping Beach Photos
As the climate crisis worsens, multiple coastlines across the world could be wiped out of existence within the next century, with the pristine beaches of Mexico being no exception, according to NASA’s 2022 Sea Level Rise Technical Report.
To combat this and help incite change, beer brand Corona Extra is passing the baton over to fans with a simple way they can help save the coasts. Dubbed the Coast Guard Initiative, the effort calls on drinkers to simply snap iconic beach photographs that will aid scientists in studying the rise in sea levels.
How can just one picture do all that? Well, one of the main methods used for researchers to study the changes in sea levels is through the good ol’ photograph. Using a bottle of Corona as a fixed point of reference, every image reveals vital information about rising seas, coastal erosion, beach composition, sand changes, and even the region’s weather conditions.

With thousands of fans poised to send in these snapshots, scientists will have more data to look into the state of Mexico’s beaches and devise better and more accurate plans to help combat climate change.
Interested in taking part? Take a picture of a Corona beer bottle on the coast, with the picture showing the horizon—sky, sea, and sand included. The image has to be an original shot and not one downloaded from social media.
