Sometimes, the best way to incite action is to shock the public into it. That’s the route the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) seems to be taking, as its latest spot shows the famed Sydney Opera House being demolished.
Created in collaboration with creative agency Spinach, the commercial is meant to raise awareness regarding the country’s wildlife extinction crisis as part of the organization’s ongoing Save Our Big Backyard campaign.
According to research conducted by the ACF, only 34% of Australians are aware that the nation is in the midst of such a crisis, with the majority turning a blind eye to the true extent of destruction taking place in the wild.
As such, by wrecking one of the nation’s most iconic landmarks, the foundation hoped to startle the public into taking notice of the issue. To make sure it had an even greater reach, the advertisement was first aired during the Anzac Day Eve AFL match on April 24, 2023.
The equivalent of 28 Sydney Opera Houses of native and threatened wildlife habitat is bulldozed every hour in Australia.
What do Opera House-goers think of these devastating stats? We took to Gadigal Country to find out.

In the video, the monument is seen being destroyed by a bulldozer as a voice-over comments on how native species’ habitats are facing destruction at the alarming rate of 28 Opera Houses per hour—a statistic that’d make anyone sit up and pause.
According to Ad News, the campaign will branch out to different states in the country, with each commercial localized for the region. For example, the Victoria version of the spot will show the MCG being demolished, while in Queensland, it’ll be the Suncorp Stadium.
