The Netherlands celebrates King’s Day, also known as the King’s birthday, on 27 April. The country turns into a sea of orange, and festivities are abound everywhere. With so many people out and about participating in the celebrations, it’s easy for one to get packed in by the crowd on the busy streets of Amsterdam.
Subway and boutique strategic creative agency Fitzroy has just the solution for that: actual submarines.
Set along the canals of Rotterdam, bright green Subway-branded watercraft took to the waters to ferry citizens from one location to the next. In a video from the company, fans of the brand were seen standing out of submarine-shaped vessels, taking in the sights and sounds of the city as they sailed past the masses.
Before this, a video of a look-alike couple of the King and Queen boarding the submarine and touring through the city. Naturally, their likeness to the royal couple caught the attention of those strolling along the canal.
Of course, the activation would not have been complete without a new sandwich in honor of the country and the King. The new Royal Sub consists of orange ingredients and only costs 27 cents, which was also the only way you could book a ride on one of the vessels. All you had to do was order the new sandwich on the JustEat app at a specific location and get picked up.
