Surfboard Crafted From Raw Sewage Spotlights The Ocean Pollution Problem

The waves might be gnarly, but they’re pretty nasty as well. In a bid to showcase how the unprotected waters in Britain are filling up with waste, London-based creative agency Mr. President and Benthos Surf are riding the wave of ocean pollution on a surfboard made out of raw sewage.
 
‘The Floater’ was designed by sustainable designer and owner of Benthos Surf, Niall Jones. He churned recycled materials into resin to form the board’s body.
 
The idea behind the initiative first started as a passion project from Mr. President. However, it soon joined forces with Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), who called out a recent crisis down in Cornwall where heavy rainfall in St. Agnes and Godrevy caused waste systems to overflow into the ocean. This has since disrupted not only nature but people’s ability to surf.

 
In order to bring attention to this, two transparent windows have been flanked on the sides of the surfboard to display the two liters (0.5 gallons) of sewage water collected from the area, and then injected into the board.
 
An accompanying video highlights the sewage scandal in Britain, and growing mistrust in water companies. Prominent figures of the surfing world are featured in the spot using the Floater.
 
The project isn’t just a stance against ocean pollution through creative means; the SAS has also called for public intervention, and is staging a paddle-out protest along several beaches and rivers across the country on Saturday, May 20.
