It’s no secret that artificial intelligence is transforming the way people create. As an experimenter of both art and technology, Google Arts & Culture, too, is gunning to discover how these two realms can intertwine to make something captivating.
In an interesting exploration, the tech giant has tapped resident artists from its Arts & Culture Lab to work with the eye-opening world of AI-generated art to create casual games.
Scroll down to find out what these projects are, and the ways they’re leveling up on this burgeoning technology to bring something new and refreshing to the table.
One for word puzzle lovers and typography enthusiasts, XYZ Toy is reminiscent of Hangman and Wordle but with an artsy twist. The puzzler, developed by Google Arts & Culture Lab artist in residence Gael Hugo, gets you to guess a word based on the visual cues in its AI-generated fonts and the number of letters designated to each word.
Be careful not to misspell your answers, as you only get a limited number of tries.
A curious, timely take on the wildly popular Among Us game, Odd One Out—dreamed up by Caroline Buttet and Emmanuel Durgoni—challenges you to pick out the AI-generated object, or the “imposter,” from real-world items.
If you think you’ve successfully identified every artificial image you’ve come across on the internet, the game implores you to think again.
So you know your cultural landmarks. Now, it’s time to put your knowledge to the test. Un-Dough! by Nicolas Barradeau remolds the classic name-the-monument game with clay-like, you guessed it, AI-created imagery.
According to Google, the doughy structures are crafted from Google AI, while “a depth and salience model” was used to give them a 3D effect.
Unlike the other three, this experiment isn’t a game but a riveting glimpse of how AI translates text in real time. Haiku Imagined, created by Lynn Cherny and Christine Surgue, animates classic and modern haiku poems using Google AI-generated letter shapes, music clips, and videos.
The technique might be set in the future, but it’s a cool way to preserve one’s culture.
Google isn’t the first to blend generative AI with gaming. One ChatGPT user worked with the chatbot to design a whole new puzzle game inspired by Sudoku.
