Part of the joy of sipping on some soda is the electric fizz that bubbles up inside a can. However, that sensation can cause issues for long-distance runners while out training.
Active lifestyle publisher Outside, activewear company Satisfy Running, and Trail Runner Magazine have developed a way to keep runners energized and safe while exercising.
Sodas—while usually touted to be less beneficial for one’s health—interestingly enough, give a performance boost to distance runners. The sugar and caffeine in the drinks can aid endurance athletes in maintaining energy throughout their regime.
The only drawback is that the carbonated drink can cause stomach cramps. Per Muse by Clio, Andrew Lincoln, vice president of creative at Outside, mentions that runners sometimes open up a can of soda and let the fizz sizzle out until it’s flat. Then, they pour it into a water bottle and set off.
Floda is a carbonation-free drink that can help runners get a boost without burping and cramping along the way. Currently, it only comes in one flavor: cola. The first free batch of the drinks went out across social media via Outside. Still, if you’re interested in no longer having to wait until your soda goes flat, both companies will soon release more information on when it will be available.
