Earlier this month, Adidas faced a class-action lawsuit over its broken partnership with Kanye West, following the sportswear giant’s decision to end the lucrative collaboration when the rapper publicly made a series of controversial hate comments.
Now, months after the sour end, it appears the fashion label has finally laid out plans to deal with the US$1.3 billion worth of unsold YEEZY sneakers. According to NPR, CEO Bjorn Gulden explained that the remaining merchandise will be sold and its proceeds donated to charity.
It seems it wasn’t an easy decision for the company, as Gulden said executives spent months debating various options on what to do with the leftover sneakers, including reaching out to several non-governmental organizations before coming to a consensus.
One of the options the brand considered was to simply destroy the stock in storage, but ultimately decided against doing so. For now, the label will work on the details of how and when it plans to sell off the shoes and how to help organizations that were “hurt by Kanye’s statements.”
