In 1993 Bowers & Wilkins introduced a stunning take on the form factor of a speaker by looking deep into the ocean for inspiration. As a result, the Nautilus became one of the more recognizable instances of technology and art converging in one, and even won the brand a Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation in 2005.
The speaker was designed after the nautilus mollusk, which has a planispiral shell and legs that stick out of its face, making it part of the cephalopod family. The animal’s shape is represented in the coil of the bottom portion of the speaker and the way each of the upper segments shoots out in a long thin pole.
In order to get your hands on one of these speakers, you will have to wait as each is made to order, and it takes more than a week to manufacture one. The device is sold in just a handful of colors, including silver, black, midnight blue metallic, and now, a new pearlescent hue.
The shiny, almost iridescent color is, of course, in reference to the inner parts of mollusk shells. Coincidentally, the pearl is also the gift given on the 30th wedding anniversary.
