It’ll be some time before most humans can get their cyborg implants. Nevertheless, many are already harnessing artificial intelligence to automate their daily workflow.
Although language models like ChatGPT are prone to hallucinating facts, users have found them to be profoundly helpful in other areas. One of the most common use cases of the OpenAI chatbot is crafting email templates and cover letters, the latter of which have been the bane of many job hunts.
Below are some ways people are adapting to this wildly evolving landscape.
General work stuff
“I first [ask ChatGPT] if I could get help in writing a hypothetical cover letter,” writes one user. They then copy and paste the job description from the listing into the conversation to give the chatbot more context on this “hypothetical job.”
The tool is also known to help people along their ideation process. While one person claims they never directly use concepts suggested by the bot, they say “it can help spark creativity if I feel stuck.”
“It’s amazing at corporate bulls**t speak!” another proclaims. They add that the chatbot has helped them “sanitize” generic emails and corporate social media posts, as well as draft things like impact statements.
The less visual side of design
One designer on Reddit shares that ChatGPT has been useful in helping them plan agendas for workshops, code for side projects, generate user personas, and polish marketing copy.
One user notes that they have consulted ChatGPT on kayak-buying options. They’re certainly not the only person to turn to the tool for shopping advice; OpenAI itself has rolled out plugins to help consumers make wiser purchasing decisions.
A wild card
“I like arguing with it,” one user confesses. “Kills time, satisfies my need to relieve frustrations without involving humans.” They joke that since the language-processing bot isn’t always proficient with facts, there have been “ample opportunities” to disagree with it.
In a similar, albeit more wholesome, vein, many have turned to ChatGPT whenever they need a listening ear or a dose of positivity.
“I use it for pep talks!” remarks one person. “Especially when I’m struggling with feeling overwhelmed,” continues the user, who says they have ADHD. The bot has given the user advice on how to pace themself, reminds them to take breaks, and even follows up with statements like: “What else do you have planned for the day?” and “That’s great that you took a break for lunch! What did you eat?”
Another usercomments they were feeling down one day and asked the AI to talk to them like a mom. “It was so sweet to me that I cried.”
A quick way to use chatbots to your advantage
One of the most common ways to steer a tool like ChatGPT into your intended direction is by starting a prompt with: “I want you to act as…”
For instance, if you need to practice for a job interview, you can enter, “I want you to act as an interviewer. You will interview me, the candidate, on the role of [position]. Ask me the questions one by one.”
To get travel advice, you could tell the bot, “I want you to act as a travel guide,” before describing your travel destination and asking for places to visit.
It goes without saying that there are many more use cases for AI-powered programs like ChatGPT. What are your favorite ones?
