Banksy’s Ukrainian Murals Shed Light On Realities Of War In New Documentary

At the recent Cannes Film Festival, creative studio Aggressive, production studio ATM Virtual, and Ukrainian 3D artist Artem Invanenko teamed up to preview MURALS, an immersive documentary experience spotlighting street artist Banksy.

Within the film, which was projected onto LED True Performance screens, viewers could watch along as virtual scans of the elusive icon’s murals were placed upon ruined buildings and devastated monuments around Ukraine.

These images of Banksy’s artwork, which first popped up unannounced in November 2022, shine a spotlight on how beauty can reemerge from the ruins, all thanks to the perseverance of the residents in these war-torn cities.

The nonprofit movie, which relied on the contributions of international vendors, was first initiated by Ivanenko, who saw the destruction in his hometown of Irpin first-hand following the Russian invasion.

Within the documentary, the creators featured detailed models with scientific and educational evidence of the invaders’ crimes, confronting viewers head-on with the reality of the war for those across the nation.

Alex Topaller, co-owner of Aggressive and one of the directors of the film, told LBB Online the project was a personal letter to friends and co-workers in Ukraine the people whose houses have been bombed, and the heroes “in the trenches.”

“Ukrainian heroes are going through the unimaginable on the front line to preserve our culture, history, and heritage. Our team is serving the same purpose in the rear,” explained Ivanenko.

“Our heavy weapons are creation and imagination used to preserve our architectural heritage, which is being targeted by the Russian rockets daily,” he continued.

“We document the destruction caused by Russia as well as the contemporary art that is emerging despite and in the face of this destruction, knowing that it may vanish in flames.”
