The New York Times is entering the podcast space with its own NYT Audio app that supports the world of audio journalism, after previewing the possibility of such a venture in 2021.
When the app was first teased, the publication noted that this new outlet would give journalists a new avenue to express themselves outside of print media.
The world of podcasts has grown in the last decade—especially during the pandemic—overtaking much of media as more and more people delve into this world. That said, the industry now looks to be cutting back as Spotify culls 11 original shows from its site.
The New York Times app, in particular, will feature its entire catalog of podcasts and new content. This includes its TheAthletic series, the Gray Lady, and Serial Productions. In addition, short audio pieces such as The Headlines, a 10-minute run down on current affairs; and Shorts, where journalists recommend things to watch, cook, and read; will find a new home on the app.
According to Bloomberg, Sam Dolnick, deputy managing editor for the Times’s audio report, noted that the venture is a new way to create novel formats centered around news and lifestyle.
In order to access it, you will need a News or All Access subscription. However, if you don’t, you can still access The Daily and The Coldest Case in Laramie podcasts on platforms like Spotify and Pocket Casts.
