‘SpaceTop’ Laptop Comes With Just A Keyboard… And A 100-Inch Virtual Display
Most laptops come with a keyboard, trackpad, and physical screen for you to work with. Tech company Sightful is taking everything we know about how notebooks work and rethinking the device by removing the need for a display altogether.
So, how do you get any work done with just a keyboard and a trackpad? With a virtual screen and goggles, that’s how. ‘SpaceTop’ is an augmented-reality laptop that doesn’t stick to the confines of a 13- or 16-inch notebook. Instead, it goes the extra mile and places a 100-inch display right before your eyes. This is done with the help of NReal glasses that can project all your tabs without anyone else seeing what you’re doing.
In a demo video, a woman is seen typing away at her keyboard while she looks straight ahead, a pair of what looks like sunglasses perched on her face. We see her answering emails and tackling everyday tasks. But when she’s done, she slips them off her, and the screen fades away—leaving her with just the SpaceTop hardware and the AR goggles.
Sightful is aiming for a portion of the workforce that work from home or are digital nomads. In the same video, it shows that once the woman is done with work, she steps out of what looks like her RV to take in the sunset on a beach. SpaceTop is also reaching out to those who need multiple displays and a larger work area but don’t want to set up a full-scale workstation with multiple screens and laptops within their campervans when traveling. With this new device, they can just carry along the keyboard and glasses with them.
SpaceTop houses a Snapdragon 865 and an Adreno 650 GPU with 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage. Its hardware weighs just 3.3 pounds and is 1.57 inches high and 10.47 inches wide.
If you want to get your hands on the SpaceTop, you’ll have to apply through a program to be one of the early adopters. That said, there’s not much known about the price.
