Tortoise shell glasses are pretty timeless, akin to the longevity of their muses. As one of the more notable retailers that sell them, GlassesUSA is shell-lebrating World Turtle Day on May 23 by showing its appreciation for the beloved reptiles.
The brand has unleashed its Save the Tortoise collection as part of a tie-in with the American Tortoise Rescue foundation to protect and raise awareness about the conservation of this species, “many of whom face extinction,” says GlassesUSA.
Adaptable for both prescription and non-prescription lenses, the tortoise shell glasses are constructed from plant-based acetate, ensuring that no additional plastics end up in the ocean. They’re also wrapped in recycled packaging.
We’re saving the best detail for the last (as they say, slow and steady wins the race), and it’s that each of the range’s 13 distinct frame styles is inspired by the shape and shell patterns of endangered tortoises.
The ‘Angonoka Tortoise’ design in beige and green, for instance, is modeled after the silhouette of the high-endangered Madagascan creature of the same name. If you turn the eyewear upside-down, it resembles “the highly domed, oval shape of this impressive tortoise.”
With the ‘Parrot Beaked’ variant in a clear-gray colorway, the frame is accentuated with “adorable red nose pads,” a nod to the noses of dominant male Parrot Beaked tortoises that turn bright red when it’s time to mate.
As for the ‘Santiago Giant’, it features an aptly oversized frame in honor of its namesake, with “beautifully chic gray tones” that match those of its wildlife counterpart.
GlassesUSA details that, having sold over a million pairs of tortoise shell glasses, it’s inspired to help protect these creatures that inform many of its designs. As such, it is giving 10% of the proceeds from the limited-edition series to the American Tortoise Rescue. Prices in the Save the Tortoise Collection range from US$88 to US$108.
