BMW Zooms Back To Silver Screen With First Short Film In 7 Years At Cannes

After a seven-year hiatus, BMW is back on the silver screen at this year’s Cannes Film Festival with a new short film dedicated to its BMW i7 M70 and the thrills of cinema called The Calm.
 
Pom Klementieff, most known for playing Mantis in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, leads the seven-minute film as an undercover spy on her way to her next mission. She enters the vehicle’s backseat and encounters a scuffle with her driver. She beats him off and gets into a high-speed chase through the streets as the i7 M70 tackles two motorcyclists trying to hunt her down. The chase is set to the thrilling sounds—or lack thereof—by Hans Zimmer. By this, the soundtrack looks at sound design in a new light as it plays on acoustics and silence to underpin the car chase scene instead of a dramatic soundtrack.
 
She comes out on top, and when she reaches her destination, she finds Uma Thurman’s character waiting for her with the location for their next mission: Cannes Film Festival.
 
BMW first started a series of films surrounding its cars with its The Hire series in the early 2000s under the guidance of directors like Ang Lee, Wong Kar-Wai, and Alejandro González Iñárritu. In its 2023 production, the short was directed by Sam Hargrave, a fight director for Marvel, and produced by Joseph Kosinski, who has just come off the success of Top Gun: Maverick.
