iPhone users, beware! Your next order of pizza on DoorDash could cost you more than your Android-wielding friend, apparently. In a new class-action lawsuit against the delivery app, customers are stating that it has been charging iPhone users more.
Users of the app have claimed that they were presented with an ‘Extended Range Fee’ that was incurred no matter where they lived. For context, this option gives users access to merchants located the farthest from their delivery point. As a result, it provides more shop and business varieties no matter where you live. That said, when applied, it does not consider whether an iPhone user is subscribed to DashPass, a US$9.99 monthly model allowing free delivery service.
The complainants held some tests and found that when they placed identical orders on an account with DashPass and one without, the ones paying for the subscription were more likely to incur a US$0.99 Extended Range Fee. And when tried on standard accounts, but this time on an iPhone and an Android, the app charged the extra amount to the former, not the latter.
The claims were brought forward by Ross Hecox, a single father in Maryland, and one of his children, Reid Hecox, last month, who also alleged that using the “Express” delivery option did not make for quicker arrivals. This service also incurs a US$3 charge each time.
The plaintiffs are asking for damages worth US$1 billion for all its customers who have fallen into its ill practices. The scandal has since picked up wind over social media and gone viral on TikTok, where a lawyer on the platform goes through the examples and shows how some people are being swindled.
However, a spokesperson from DoorDash told Insider that the claims were “baseless and simply without merit.” They went on to say that each fee is disclosed to customers during purchasing and checkout, and the company will continue to uphold the trust it has with its customers and fight against the allegations.
