James Cameron Announces Next ‘Terminator’ To Be Based On Actual AI Insurgence

James Cameron’s Terminator saw a world under the grip of Skynet, a machine-learning database set up to extract information on the possibility of terror attacks from extremist groups. The system eventually turned against the people it was helping and plotted to finish off humanity before humans couled destroy it. 
 
Cameron was behind the first two Terminator films, highly acclaimed as some of the best action movies to date. Unfortunately, the next few sequels, which Cameron did not have much to do with later, did not sit too well with audiences.
 
By and large, the franchise was a grandiose look at the rise of robots, filled with thrilling action sequences with Arnold Schwarzenegger as the lead. But over the years, it’s hard to deny that the rise and fall of Skynet almost mirror society’s battle with technology, especially as we teeter on the edge of a new wave of AI.
 
Now, Cameron is back with a possible cautionary tale on how AI, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, will (or has, depending on when the movie is released) affect society.
 
At the Dell Technologies World 2023 event, the Avatar director mentioned that he has a script draft and is waiting to see which direction these machines take. At the rate that it is progressing, experts are already claiming a halt to the advancements of such technologies until more about it is understood. In spite of that, it has not deterred companies from continuing to employ such machines into its roster. If this keeps up, maybe the world could use a real-life John Connor as well.
