‘Endangered Typeface’ Shows Harsh Reality Of Extinction With Vanishing Letters

In collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the non-profit Associação Natureza Portugal (ANP) has partnered with the Lisbon Zoo and BAR Ogilvy to bring to the forefront the startling reality that certain animals in the wild face today.

Known as The Endangered Typeface, the project hopes to spotlight wildlife from the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species. Each “living” letter in the font corresponds to a species.

As the number of animals continues to dwindle, the letter associated with it begins to evolve by “disappear” proportionately, offering a harsh look at the state of decay in the planet’s ailing ecosystem.

The threat of extinction doesn’t just spell disaster for a particular species. Angela Morgado, Executive Director of ANP|WWF, explained that when wildlife declines at an “alarming rate,” there are serious consequences to be had for human health and livelihoods.

Through the typeface, the more than 42,000 endangered species around the world aren’t just statistics to be read in headlines, but come to life in a “simple, clear, and impactful visual representation.” Head here to download the font or make a donation to the cause.
