WhatsApp is expanding its horizons and offering users a fresh way to stay connected with friends and family through the introduction of ‘Channels’. This interesting new feature combines elements of Twitter and Instagram to create a unique broadcasting experience.
While WhatsApp has long been known for its private messaging, calling, and video-calling capabilities, Channels opens up new possibilities for reaching a broader audience, and sharing updates and information.
Each Channel will have an admin who can post text, pictures, videos, and polls. Interaction with them will remain one-way, with viewers unable to engage directly. Businesses, in particular, can leverage this feature to keep customers informed about shipping details, while individuals can use it to share news, updates on sporting events, weather, traffic, and all sorts of hobbies and interests.
It’s important to note that currently, Channels does not have end-to-end encryption, which is a hallmark of WhatsApp’s privacy measures. However, WhatsApp is actively exploring options to implement this encryption for Channels in the future, ensuring a high level of privacy and security.
As WhatsApp is linked to users’ phone numbers, the new feature maintains privacy by keeping phone numbers and profile pictures hidden from view, and the same goes for followers.
Admins also have control over preventing followers from taking screenshots, forwarding posts, and can even hide channels from general searches. They can also manage their follower list, allowing them to choose who can follow and who cannot. Posts will be available for viewing for 30 days before being automatically deleted from all devices.
Currently, Channels is only available in Colombia and Singapore. Still, WhatsApp has plans to roll out the feature to more countries in the coming months.
