Twitter’s new CEO,Linda Yaccarino, has called on her employees to aid her in building “Twitter 2.0—the world’s most accurate real-time information source.”
Elon Musk famously bought Twitter towards the end of last year after a long-drawn-out battle against the social media company. Eventually, he took to its helm and has since been at the center of many controversial decisions, including mass layoffs, reinstating far-right public figures, increasing API prices, and even ensuing mass confusion over how Twitter Blue and blue ticks are meant to work now.
Musk has now found a successor to run the operations in Linda Yaccarino, former head of advertising from NBCUniversal. In her first email to her employees, which was eventually republished as a Twitter thread, she expressed that this new era of the site would need the help of everyone to bring to light.
Hello Twitter. People keep asking me: Why Twitter? So, I’ll tell you. ð
“It’s also becoming clear that the global town square needs transformation—to drive civilization forward through the unfiltered exchange of information and open dialogue about the things that matter most to us,” read part of her email. “Have you ever been talking with someone particularly insightful and thought you should have the freedom to speak your mind? We all should. Enter Twitter 2.0.”
While her visions for the newly reformed platform mirror Musk’s goals, she stands at the base of a rather daunting mountain. Under Musk’s reign, half of its top 100 advertisers have since ditched the platform, including Coca-Cola, Meta, and Microsoft.
Musk’s polarizing views on politics, gender identity, and anti-vaccine views may go hand in hand with his determination to turn Twitter into a place that truly upholds free speech, even if the site’s moderators have flagged him. Yaccarino no doubt has much to clean up with since Twitter has been put through the wringer, having many casual users rethink their decisions to stay on the app.
Whether she will be able to bring the platform back to where it once was, is something only time will tell. But if it does happen, you’ll hear it first on Twitter.
