Atari Releases Its First Official Cartridge Since 1990 With ‘Mr Run And Jump’
For many, the Atari 2600 might have been the first console they would have owned. Its mark on the gaming sphere forever changed how consoles were viewed and paved the way for Nintendo and, later, the Xbox and PlayStation. Unfortunately, it fell out of popularity and has since been considered mainly as a relic as video games advance at lightning speed.
Atari is about to return to the ring with a new title fit for the 2600 and the VCS model, called Mr Run and Jump. The game’s story follows Mr Run and Jump and his dog Leap who has accidentally ventured into the Dark Realm. Of course, its ominous name can only mean harm might befall the dog, so the titular character sets off on an adventure to save it.
The game will have 80 new screens and six different worlds. Each session starts with 25,000 points, which eventually diminishes by one point with each passing second, and you lose 100 points when you crash into an enemy.
Atari worked with John Mikula from the indie studio Graphite Lab for the action platformer. The cartridge has new materials with beveled edges to prevent pin damage and gold-plated connectors. It will also come packaged in a sealed box with an instruction manual.
A more updated version of the game will be available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series XS, and on Steam and Epic. Here, Mr Run and Jump will host more than 30 hours of gameplay with time trials and modern graphics.
Pre-orders for Mr Run and Jump have begun and it will launch on July 31st with a retail price of US$59.99.
