Engineers Unveil AI-Powered Board Game Robot That Teaches You To Play ‘Go’
Back in 2016, artificial intelligence computer AlphaGo made headlines across the world when it beat the human world champion, Lee Sedol, in the ancient strategy board game of Go.
Now, taking that one step further, China-based firm SenseTime has created an AI-powered robot that will play the game alongside users to help them learn how the strategies work.
In fact, the bot comes fully equipped with a robotic arm to move the pieces around, a digital display screen, and a board on which the tiles sit. Gamers can choose to battle the AI from entry-level all the way to the professional level.
“We hope to redefine the future of home robotics with SenseRobot, not only bringing new life experiences to households, but also injecting new vitality into the game of Go and promoting the diverse development of traditional culture,” the company said in a press release.
Those looking to learn more about the techniques behind the 4,000-year-old game will be able to tap into the robot’s vast library of Go exercises and human-to-machine or online human-to-human matches.
All of these features will be accompanied by a series of visual, auditory, and tactile interactions to make over 2,000 specialized exercises across its seven levels all the more exciting.
Go enthusiasts can purchase the SenseRobot Go Pro for RMB 3,999 (US$561) or its current pre-sale price of RMB 3,799 (US$533). Experts can opt for the Master version of the robot, which comes with a mobile power supply and portable trolly case for RMB 4,999 (US$701).
“The SenseRobot Go is more than just a physical embodiment of software, it is a unique blend of advanced technology and human-like interactions,” explained Shen Hui, Dean of Innovative Engineering Institute of SenseTime.
“Utilizing the screen, voice, game board, and robotic arm, we have created a systematic learning and practicing experience that emphasizes human-machine collaboration,” he added.
