Origami-Inspired Solar Panel Fits Into Your Bag So You Can Bring Power Anywhere

If there’s one thing that’s become an absolute essential in everyone’s bags in recent years, it’s the portable charger. But for those planning to go off-the-grid on an adventure, the regular pocket-sized gadget may not offer enough juice.

As such, Utah-based Sego Innovations is developing a portable, origami-inspired solar charger that can be folded (just like origami paper!) and fitted into backpacks to be brought around on trips into the wilderness.

The renewable power system, which is estimated to weigh three pounds, is described as “ultra-portable,” allowing it to be set up anywhere. Plus, the crafty design allows travelers to fold the device down to fit into duffel bags, cargo boxes, suitcases, or even beneath the front seat of a car.

In terms of the technology behind the charger, this prototype model runs on SunPower monocrystalline solar cells, which offer up to 25 watts of charging in optimal conditions. When fully expanded, the solar gadget holds a total surface area of 2.56 square feet.

Of course, as a travel device, the solar cells come with a special covering on the fiberglass laminate substrate to ensure the charger stands up to harsh weather and constant sun exposure. Joints, hinges, and magnets are included to help make the unfolding simpler.

As per Sego Innovations, it will take approximately one to two hours to fully juice up a smartphone, while a tablet could take up to four hours—all dependent on sun conditions. Thankfully, users can just leave it on its sturdy two-legged stand and sit back during the process.

“Origami, the art of folding paper into intricate shapes and patterns, provides engineers with techniques to create structures that are ultra-compact, strong and stable, yet light and flexible, which is ideal for applications in space or medical devices,” the company explained.
