In a surprising twist, Apple’s iPhone has emerged as the world’s favorite camera brand, according to a recent survey using data from Flickr. If you’re an avid photographer, you might have been expecting to see Nikon or Canon reign supreme. Still, with smartphones overruling our lives, most of us are walking around with a watered-down DSLR in our pockets, making it a no-brainer that a company specializing in mobile phones has taken the top spot.

The study conducted by Simple Ghar examined 470 million images to determine the most popular camera used by photographers. Even more astonishing, the reigning champion is none other than the four-year-old iPhone 11, with over 13 million tags on Flickr. Samsung, Google, OnePlus, Huawei, and Xiaomi are other mobile brands that can be seen at the top of the list.

Apple’s dominance in the charts highlights this shift in photography that allows anyone with a smartphone to snap away near-professional images and edit their work right on the spot. A separate study showed that 92% of photos these days are taken on phones rather than traditional cameras.

And in the US, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the most popular camera, showing that these tech companies provide professionals and everyday people with competent gadgets that can go from texting to nearly full-blown photoshoots with just a swipe.

The survey also indicates a decline in traditional camera sales, as renowned manufacturers like Canon, Nikon, and Sony (which placed second, third, and fourth in the study) face competition from the accessibility and capabilities of smartphone cameras. However, the study notes that Flickr, as a photo-sharing platform, has fallen in popularity after being overshadowed by Instagram and Facebook. That has not stopped professionals from taking to the site to compare notes and discoveries, which the study is partially based on.

Nonetheless, it provides an intriguing insight into iPhones’ pervasive presence and image quality capabilities in the photography landscape.
