Nike Unveils ‘Aerogami’ Jacket With Self-Adjusting Vents To Keep Your Body Cool

Even with all the performance apparel and gadgets out on the market, there’s one long-standing issue avid runners face: the problem of regulating body temperature and ventilation while donning a running jacket.

As such, scientists from the Nike Explore Team (NXT) and the Nike Sport Research Lab (NSRL) have come up with a brand-new innovation, first showcased in the sportswear giant’s latest Nike Run Division Aerogami Jacket.

According to Nike, the Aerogami technology comprises an autonomous venting system that adapts to runners’ needs, creating breathable apparel with on-demand ventilation that interacts with one’s body in real-time to provide cooling relief.

The tiny winged vents on the garment open as a wearer begins to sweat, channeling better airflow and allowing excess sweat to escape the skin. Once the body has sufficiently cooled down and dried, the vents close back up without any user input, thanks to a special moisture-reactive film.

On the Nike Run Divison Aerogami Jacket, this venting system features across the chest and back of the piece. These two areas were specifically selected as they are places where runners typically heat up and sweat most.

In addition, to adjust to the differing needs between men’s and women’s bodies, NSRL turned to tests and data visualization to vary the placement of vents on gender-specific jackets. For the women’s jackets, the vents are situated in the area where a sports bra normally sits.

“We know feeling too warm, uncomfortable, and distracted while wearing a running jacket is a common challenge many runners face,” remarked Jahan Behbahany, Senior Apparel Innovation Product Manager in Nike’s Advanced Innovation Collective.

“So we’ve obsessed developing an innovative solution that gives them increased breathability without compromising style and protection. What’s great about this technology is not only can the athlete feel the benefit, but they can also see it,” he added.

Those looking to get their hands on the women’s Nike Run Division Aerogamic Jacket can do so from July 2023, while the men’s jacket will require a longer wait as it’s scheduled to be released later this fall.
