According to The Wall Street Journal, YouTube is venturing into the realm of online gaming with a feature called ‘Playables’. The video-sharing platform is expanding its reach to allow users to access games on mobile devices and desktop computers. Google employees received an email to test the new platform to rejuvenate YouTube’s advertising revenue.
While there is no word on what this potential upgrade might look like, one can only assume that it allows users to easily switch between gameplay and catch up on their favorite content creators.
Among those being tested is Stack Bounce, where players bounce a ball to smash layers of bricks. Users might soon be able to play these titles through the YouTube website or the mobile app for iOS and Android.
While this might not be on the same level as Super Mario Bros. or the like, the popularity of this genre of online games from platforms like Facebook suggests they could still pique the interest of online players looking for a familiar experience.
The move is admittedly smart and nicely timed—if it reaches the public soon enough—as many of YouTube’s viewers already use the app to watch gaming content and competitions. Having the platform also host its own form of game sets it apart from rival streaming site, Twitch.
Though, how exactly YouTube aims to profit from this venture remains unclear. Developers already face difficulties in the post-pandemic era, and, as Phone Arena pointed out, even titles like Angry Birds are no longer generating substantial revenue.
