Ireland Asks Public To Pick Floral & Fauna For Refreshed Passport Design

A primrose, cowslip, yarrow, mountain hare, red beer, or Irish Setter—which of Ireland’s diverse floral and fauna should feature on the country’s upcoming passport? That’s the question the public has been tasked with, as the country seeks opinions on a refreshed design.

Starting this week, citizens can leave feedback for the Department of Foreign Affairs on the forthcoming design, which will be given a theme related to the country’s incredible biodiversity and natural environment.

According to The Irish Times, due to the current passport entering its 10th year of use, it’s time for the document to be updated for citizens in order to include the latest security features. Canada is another country that updated its passport, this time with less history and more nature.

Those participating in the public consultation will get to choose from a range of animals and plants that could be included in the design. One can pick from a list of 40 animals and 40 plants divided into four different segments, of which participants will be asked to select their three favorites per section.

As the suggestions are “not intended to be exhaustive,” residents will be given the opportunity to name other animals and plants at the end of the survey that may have been missed out. The public consultation will remain open till July 12, 2023.
