Subway Restaurant Appalls Diners With Sign Joking About Doomed Submersible

Subway might be all about freshness, but a joke made by one of its branches about OceanGate’s Titan may have come too soon.
The tragedy in question gripped the world when five passengers and the Titanic-bound submersible they were in vanished, with the search for them racing against a depleting oxygen tank. On June 22, four days after their disappearance, it was confirmed that the Titan had imploded, potentially during its descent, killing all five people on board.
The days-long saga drew in a mixed bag of responses. While many observers sympathized with the victims and their families, others indulged in “eat-the-rich” fantasies. A trip to view the shipwreck via Titan costs US$25,000 per passenger, making the experience exclusive to very wealthy adrenaline-seekers.
A consequence of the implosion sees a barrage of memes poking fun at how billionaires aren’t able to let lost Titanic passengers rest. One of these jokes seemingly surfaced in the real world, outside a Subway location in a Savannah, Georgia suburb—because subs know subs, apparently.
A sign by the restaurant in Rincon coldly referenced the catastrophe with the words: “Our subs don’t implode.”

“Not only is it distasteful, [but it’s also] just sad,” one customer tweets. “Do better.”
On Reddit, one person questions: “Is it tasteless? Well, yeah, it is Subway.”
“What’s next, [a] discount for all OceanGate survivors?” ponders another.
The ridicule might come in bad taste, but some people are appreciating its dark nature. “Would 100% eat there just because they have this sign,” claims one user.
The manager of the franchise tells members of the press that the sign has been taken down, but did not make further comment.
However, a Subway spokesperson confirms that the company has contacted the store and warned that such comments have “no place in our business,” adding that the message has been removed.
