Tesla Changes The Default Car Color For Models 3 And Y

Steering the opposite way of Fiat, which just announced it will no longer produce gray cars, Tesla is adding more shading to roads with a new standard color for the Model 3 and Model Y in North America.
The new default for both models is Midnight Silver Metallic, replacing the previous free option of Pearl White Multi-Coat, which was the main colorway for the Model 3 from June 2019 and the Model Y from March 2020.

Prior to the complimentary white paint finish, the cars arrived in Solid Black, InsideEVs reports.
The change means buyers in North America will be able to have their cars painted in Midnight Silver Metallic free of charge, but other hues—including Pearl White and Solid Black—will require a top-up.

Specifically, picking Pearl White Multi-Coat or Deep Blue Metallic will warrant an additional cost of US$1,000; Solid Black costs US$1,500; while Red Multi-Coat will set drivers back a further US$2,000.

The company might have swapped out the body colors in the region following complaints by drivers of there being too many white Teslas on the road. Responding to a gripe in October 2021, CEO Elon Musk said the concern was a “good point” and that he would discuss it with his team.

All told, the free paint color differs depending on the country you live in. Pearl White is still the default in Europe, whereas Solid Black is what is standard in China.
Musk has been busy making incremental changes to his projects. Besides presumably having a part to play in the new color selections, he was also involved in the implementation of Twitter’s daily reading limits.
