With fans all over the globe, not everyone who watches Major League Baseball (MLB) will ever get the chance to see a game in person and experience the electric atmosphere of being inside a stadium.
As such, the league has teamed up with virtual world architect Improbable to create a metaverse stadium for its upcoming celebrity all-star softball game on July 8, 2023.
Unfortunately, fans won’t be able to strap on a virtual-reality headset and fully immerse themselves in the space as though they’re at an actual ballgame.
Rather, the site will allow users to wander around a digital remake of the stadium via an avatar, in which they can take part in mini-games and tune into a live stream of the match with like-minded individuals.

One interesting highlight, as per Mashable, is that the sound in the metaverse stadium will be calibrated according to where one’s avatar is placed.
The crowd’s roar will be dependent on the other users present in the virtual world, allowing it to shift depending on where one is seated during the game.
According toImprobable, the MLB virtual ballpark was specifically designed to be as accessible to as many fans as possible, only requiring an internet connection to take part in the fun.
“We’ve taken what baseball fans know and love about their unique ballpark experiences and connected it to an accessible, virtual world,” said Kenny Gersh, MLB executive vice-president for media and business development.
“Not everyone has the opportunity to attend Major League Baseball games or enjoy a Major League ballpark experience, but now we can provide this opportunity to anyone with an internet connection, no matter where they are.”
