In February, The Pokémon Company announced it was reviving Pokémon Sleep—a project that’s been lying dormant since 2019. Unlike the popular Pokémon Go, which requires players to move from one location to another collecting Pokémon and fighting battles, this one’s all about rest.
Gamers will find themselves on an island among the subjects being studied by Professor Neroli. But no, he’s not looking for an individual’s best moves but will analyze each person’s sleeping habits and categorize them into ‘Dozing’, ‘Snoozing’, or ‘Slumbering’ types.
Now, a newgameplay trailer of the long-awaited application has surfaced, with an estimated release date later this month. In the clip, players are seen paired up with Snorlax—the resident “sleepy” Pokémon. The bond between the two increases based on one’s sleep.
A good night’s rest allows Snorlax to draw “drowsy power” from the player, while other tired Pokémon will visit and present gamers with differing sleep styles. The aim of the game is to collect all types of sleep found in the ‘Sleep Style Dex’.
It appears the app will make use of smartphones’ microphones and accelerometers to track a user’s sleep, including how much one snores during the night. Those who tend to toss and turn often will likely be visited by Togepi with its ‘Rocking Sleep’ style.
Those partial to disturbing bed partners could find Jigglypuff offering a song via its ‘Singing Sleep’ style instead. Unfortunately, as Engadget noted, Pokémon Sleep does not sync with any other fitness trackers, though it can be paired up with the Pokémon Go Plus bracelet.
