Sony Introduces Detachable Speakers That Boom Portable 360° Surround Sound

Sony is introducing the HT-AX7, a compact speaker set with an exceptional wireless surround sound system. This innovative three-speaker configuration maximizes space efficiency while bringing an immersive sound experience to your environment.

The HT-AX7 consists of a central base speaker and two smaller circular ones that can be detached and placed around the room. When removed, they automatically activate the sound field, enhancing the listening experience.

For the most part, the device is meant to be used by one person at a time. So you can place it around you when lying in bed, at your desk, or in the kitchen cooking. That doesn’t mean you can’t whip it out during a dinner party, but it works better when one person is in the sound field at a time. Sony also recommends placing the satellite speakers about an arm’s length away from you, preferably below ear level.

You can connect the HT-AX7 to your smartphone or any other device via Bluetooth and transform your music into dynamic three-dimensional surround audio in real-time. Sony incorporates its advanced 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology, enabling the additional speakers to create an enveloping “bubble-like” sound sphere.

This technology can also isolate and redirect individual audio objects to the detachable speakers, enhancing the immersive 3D experience. Additionally, when they are docked back in, the system can still produce impressive surround-like audio using the upmixer algorithm and “sound-field effect” option.

The HT-AX7 boasts an impressive battery life, lasting up to 30 hours on a full charge. Furthermore, a quick 10-minute charge provides approximately two and a half hours of uninterrupted usage.

Sony has also incorporated sustainability by crafting the device from 100% PET bottles. Currently, the HT-AX7 is available for pre-order online at US$499.99.
