It seems only yesterday that the Angry Birds had everyone from every age group under its wing. When the game first hit the Apple App Store in 2009, it was an instant hit with its simple game mechanics of slingshot birds at green pigs. Over time, it has amassed 25 billion downloads, two feature films, and a Netflix series.
Now, the Angry Birds universe is expanding once more as Rovio Entertainment tries to bring back the nostalgia of the craze from the late 2000s with a retail café in New York. Yes, a café. Even if the app is no longer ranked on the App Store or Google’s Play Store, IMG, Rovio Entertainment, and the Shanghai Construction Group America still believe that there’s enough of the hype to bring people into the store.
iSwii byAngry Birds will open on Saturday in a new retail center in Flushing, Queens. There, fans old and new will be greeted by an opulent mural of the game on the ceiling. There are also plenty of artwork, photos, and memorabilia around. Of course, there will also be merchandise in just about every manner to satisfy the Angry Birds fan in you that you thought died in the 2010s.
And as it is a café, there will be sold treats such as cakes and pastries, though it’s hard to say if it will put up much competition against a nearby bakery or if it’ll just make a cute throwback Instagram post. Here’s hoping there’s no actual poultry on the menu, or there might be some real angry birds around.
If that’s not enough for you, there is also a private room where guests can host birthday parties, play the game in virtual reality, and cop a free Angry Birds-themed swag bag.
