Hermès Creates Stage Production Featuring Singing Kelly Bags & More

Hermès is invoking imaginations to horse around with a dreamy stage performance coming to the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, California.

On the Wings of Hermès transports viewers to a fantastical universe dreamed up by Belgian director and choreographer duo Jaco van Dormael and Michèle Anne de Mey, and brought alive by the Astragales dance company.

Here, audiences are taken to seven iterations of the fable of Pegasus, with seven unique backdrops.

The production, set in a dark space mirroring a film studio, sees Hermès objects take a life of their own—with a pair of flying lovers, colorful puppets, and even a choir of Kelly handbags as part of the ensemble.

All its elements illustrate “the lightness that is omnipresent at Hermès,” notes artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas, from the delicate touch of the brand’s craftsmen, to its elegant materials and “the subtle notes of a perfume.”

“It is an experience which sparks the imagination, designed by artisans of dreams,” Dumas shares.

The entire showcase, “an ode to daydreaming,” is performed live and captured by Van Dormael to be projected onto a large screen so as to carry out the surreal illusion.

First appearing in Japan, France, and Taiwan, On the Wings of  Hermès will make its way to Santa Monica from July 15 to 23, and will be open to the public for free. Booking information, plus the trailer, can be found here.
